  8.        1.  _I_n_t_r_o_d_u_c_t_i_o_n

  10.        This document describes the features of release 2.2.* of the
  11.        Impressario software for IRIX.  Impressario is a visual
  12.        printing and scanning environment for SGI workstations.  It
  13.        consists of an optional host-based Adobe PostScript
  14.        interpreter, printer drivers, scanner drivers, text
  15.        processing tools and the Impressario Developer's Kit.
  16.  
  17.        Impressario is distributed with new hardware systems WITHOUT
  18.        the FLEXlm node locked license for the Adobe PostScript
  19.        interpreter.  A license must be purchased if you wish to use
  20.        the Adobe PostScript interpreter.  Many of the printer
  21.        drivers require the Adobe PostScript interpreter (for
  22.        details see section 2, Installation Information).  In
  23.        general, if your printer does not have built-in PostScript
  24.        capability you will need the optional license to use the
  25.        printer with Impressario.

  27.        Quick list of what is new in Impressario version 2.2 versus
  28.        version 2.1:

  30.           +o A PPD based driver has been added to Impressario.  A
  31.             large number of PostScript Printer Description (PPD)
  32.             files are now supplied with Impressario (PPD files are
  33.             also available for most PostScript capable printers
  34.             from the printer vendor's Web site).  The result is
  35.             that Impressario supports more printers with built-in
  36.             PostScript capability.  See the ppd(1m) man page and
  37.             Section 3, Changes and Additions, in this document for
  38.             details.

  40.           +o The HP ScanJet 5P scanner is now supported.

  42.        Impressario 2.2.2 is released for IRIX 6.2 systems.
  43.        Impressario 2.2.3 is released for IRIX 6.3 systems.

  45.        Impressario 2.2.5 is released for IRIX 6.5 systems.

  50.        equivalent (they differ in the compilers used for building
  51.        the product and the MIPS instruction set used).

  74.        A more detailed description of Impressario follows:
  75.  
  76.        The Impressario software provides a visual printing and
  77.        scanning environment.  It contains drivers for sending print
  78.        jobs to a printer connected to an SGI workstation via a
  79.        parallel, serial, SCSI, or network connection.   All
  80.        Impressario printer drivers maintain status information in a
  81.        printer object database.  The Graphical Scan tool allows you
  82.        to view data from a scanner, file, or workstation display.
  83.        The Scanner installation tool provides a simple interface
  84.        for installing and configuring scanners on your workstation.
  85.  
  86.        The PostScript interpreter is an Adobe Level II CPSI
  87.        implementation (version 2015).  The PostScript interpreter
  88.        is a separate purchase option and uses a node-locked
  89.        software license.  Many of the Impressario printer drivers
  90.        require the optional PostScript interpreter. See section 2.4
  91.        _P_r_e_r_e_q_u_i_s_i_t_e_s for information on license requirements.  For
  92.        more information on the PostScript interpreter see the

  95.        The Impressario Developer's Kit allows application and
  96.        driver developers to create software that fully supports
  97.        printing and scanning in a manner that is consistent with
  98.        the Impressario architecture.

  100.        IMPORTANT: If your printer or scanner is already installed,
  101.        you must delete and reinstall it using the printer manager
  102.        or scanner manager to take advantage of new features in this
  103.        latest release of Impressario. See Chapter 2 IIIInnnnssssttttaaaallllllllaaaattttiiiioooonnnn

  105.        running IRIX 4.*.  IRIX 4.* users should not delete and
