1. _I_n_t_r_o_d_u_c_t_i_o_n
This document describes the features of release 2.2.* of the
Impressario software for IRIX. Impressario is a visual
printing and scanning environment for SGI workstations. It
consists of an optional host-based Adobe PostScript
interpreter, printer drivers, scanner drivers, text
processing tools and the Impressario Developer's Kit.
Impressario is distributed with new hardware systems WITHOUT
the FLEXlm node locked license for the Adobe PostScript
interpreter. A license must be purchased if you wish to use
the Adobe PostScript interpreter. Many of the printer
drivers require the Adobe PostScript interpreter (for
details see section 2, Installation Information). In
general, if your printer does not have built-in PostScript
capability you will need the optional license to use the
printer with Impressario.
Quick list of what is new in Impressario version 2.2 versus
version 2.1:
+o A PPD based driver has been added to Impressario. A
large number of PostScript Printer Description (PPD)
files are now supplied with Impressario (PPD files are
also available for most PostScript capable printers
from the printer vendor's Web site). The result is
that Impressario supports more printers with built-in
PostScript capability. See the ppd(1m) man page and
Section 3, Changes and Additions, in this document for
details.
+o The HP ScanJet 5P scanner is now supported.
Impressario 2.2.2 is released for IRIX 6.2 systems.
Impressario 2.2.3 is released for IRIX 6.3 systems.
Impressario 2.2.4 is released for IRIX 6.4 systems.
Impressario 2.2.5 is released for IRIX 6.5 systems.
There are no Impressario 2.2.0 or 2.2.1 versions.
All versions of Impressario 2.2.* are functionally
equivalent (they differ in the compilers used for building
the product and the MIPS instruction set used).
Note: Packaged with your software is a separate sheet that
contains the Software License Agreement. This
software is provided to you solely under the terms
and conditions of the Software License Agreement.
Please take a few moments to review the Agreement.

A more detailed description of Impressario follows:
The Impressario software provides a visual printing and
scanning environment. It contains drivers for sending print
jobs to a printer connected to an SGI workstation via a
parallel, serial, SCSI, or network connection. All
Impressario printer drivers maintain status information in a
printer object database. The Graphical Scan tool allows you
to view data from a scanner, file, or workstation display.
The Scanner installation tool provides a simple interface
for installing and configuring scanners on your workstation.
The PostScript interpreter is an Adobe Level II CPSI
implementation (version 2015). The PostScript interpreter
is a separate purchase option and uses a node-locked
software license. Many of the Impressario printer drivers
require the optional PostScript interpreter. See section 2.4
_P_r_e_r_e_q_u_i_s_i_t_e_s for information on license requirements. For
more information on the PostScript interpreter see the
ppppssssrrrriiiipppp((((1111)))) man page.
The Impressario Developer's Kit allows application and
driver developers to create software that fully supports
printing and scanning in a manner that is consistent with
the Impressario architecture.
IMPORTANT: If your printer or scanner is already installed,
you must delete and reinstall it using the printer manager
or scanner manager to take advantage of new features in this
latest release of Impressario. See Chapter 2 IIIInnnnssssttttaaaallllllllaaaattttiiiioooonnnn
IIIInnnnffffoooorrrrmmmmaaaattttiiiioooonnnn for details. An exception are printer clients
running IRIX 4.*. IRIX 4.* users should not delete and
reinstall existing printers.

After you install the online release notes for a product
(the _r_e_l_n_o_t_e_s subsystem), you can view the release notes on
your screen.
Note: You can read the online release notes for most
products before installing the software. Refer to
the booklet in your CD-ROM case for more information.
If you have a graphics system, select ``Release Notes'' from
the Help submenu of the Toolchest. This displays the
_g_r_e_l_n_o_t_e_s(1) graphical browser for the online release notes.
Refer to the _g_r_e_l_n_o_t_e_s(1) man page for information on
options to this command.
If you do not have a graphics system, you can use the
_r_e_l_n_o_t_e_s command. Refer to the _r_e_l_n_o_t_e_s(1) man page for
accessing the online release notes.
